The exotic blocks on northern slope of the Himalayas described in present paper are the relics of rock blocks transported in a long distance in the process of subduction and collision. Genetically, they are distinguished from both klippe and nappe as well as from melanges and olistostromes because they are not the result of mixing with allochthonous rocks. The characteristics of exotic blocks on northern slope of the Himalayas are presented as follows:1. They distribute on the southern side of Yarlun-Zangbo Jiang suture, in a narrow longitudinal belt on the northern border of the Indian plate.2. These blocks are composed mainly of Permian brittle limestones.3. Their gentle occurrence and the overturning of drag folds to wards the south indicate that these exotic blocks were transported from the north.4. The source of these exotic blocks is quite different because, faunistically, they reflect different sedimentary environments. Basing on the characters of faunal assemblage and lithologic correlation, the origin of these exotic blocks may be distinguished into three types: the subduction, the obduction and the compression. They are all formed by the northward subduction of the Indian plate down the Eurasian plate and the collision between them.

The Yihe-Suhe fault belt is a Mesozoic rift structure, consisting of many secondary faults. The left lateral strike-slip motion along these faults between the Jurassic and the Cretaceous periods appears to be the initial stage of development of the rift. Then a florishing stage of faulting depression and extension was in Cretaceous time. Since the Tertiary period it had become a compressonal tectonic belt characterized by the intensive folding and thrusting, and the rift is disappeared.

There are three major fault blocks in China, i. e. the North China block province (consisting of six subblocks), the Yangtze block and the Tarim block. Their origin, development and consolidation are controlled by the pre-Sinian orogenies. One fault block may have been resulted from a single orogenic cycle or in most cases a few orogenic cycles because of the pre-Sinian orogeny was characterized by multiple cycles. Since the idea that an orogeny is occurred simultaneously all over the world was generally denied by most geologists, we consider that the orogeny must also be diachronous" especially in non-metamorphic sequences. Moreover, we suggest that the Jinning orogeny in the Yangtze block is a good example of such diachronous orogenies. But in the metamorphosed sequences, an uncomformity which can be observed in geological section may generally represent a combinative expression of many orogenies.Oro'genic cycles in these three major fault blocks have been classified as follows:Sanggan cycle (>2500-2600 m.y.)Wutai cycle (>2000 m.y.)Zhongyue cycle (>1700 m.y.)Yinshan cycle (>1200-1300 m.y.)Jinning cycle (>1050-900 m.y.)An attempt to correlate them with other orogenies that occurred in the other continents of the world is made in this paper.

In this paper a fracture zone caused by Aug. 11, 1931 Fuyun earthquake in Xinjiang province is detailly described, and the seismogenic structure and its recent tectonic movement are discussed. This seismic fracture zone has developed superimposedly on the NNW-trending Kok-tohai-Ertai fault, its southern end is beyond the old fracture. The full length of this zone is 170 km. General trend is N342癢. The fault plane dips to north-west at an angle of 70?. The occurence of seismogenic fault, mountain ridges and ravines show that the movement is mainly horizontal with right-lateral wrench. The great Fuyun earthquake of 8.0 magnitude is an appearance of the recent movement along the Koktohai-Ertai fault, and this movement has a clearly inherit nature in terms of the regional stress state, fracture mechanism and pattern movement.

In Daheshang mountain and adjacent area occurs an upper interlayer (or cover) gliding belt consisting of a series of imbricate overthrust faults, at their base exists a large main thrust withalow dip angle, occurring between the overlying soft cover and the underlying rigid rock basement. The gliding motion along this main thrust caused the geological structures to be formed between the cover and basement. But they differ from the structures formed in Pre-Sinian basement. The formation of this structural system in studied area can be considered as a reault of lateral compression in SEE and NWW directions. And the cover gliding probably started from Late Paleozoic and continued in Jurassic period or later.

According to the principle proposed by A. B. Spencer, a computer program for pe-trofabric data processing has been compiled. The program presented in this paper consists of plofing fabric diagram and diagram of kinetic orientation of carbonate minerals which is very useful not only to common petrofabric analysis, but also to petrofabric stress analysis. An example of its application is illustrated herein.

In this paper some heat flow values the geothermal in the Bohai sea and adjacent region are described. The temperature distribution, geothermal gradient and heat flow in this region have a tendency of increasing gradually from the land to the sea. This tendency is well correlated to the geotectonic features and the structure of the crust and upper mantle, and approximately coincident to the features of other geophysical field in this region. It is suggested that the possible upwelling of the material from the upper mantle in this region, especially in some segments of Tangchen-Lujiang fault belt, caused the deep parts of the crust different in temperature and density, leading to high concentration of thermal stress.

A comparision of geomagnetic polarity of marine sediments with the geomagnetic polarity time-scale by A. Cox has been made on the basis of 14C-dating of a peat layer in this paper. The Polarity level correlated with the Laschamp Event in Brunhes Normal Epoch has been discovered in the marine sediments in the Hunghai Sea. The age and rate of accumulation of the sediments have been estimated.

A new procedure for preparing the calcium carbide has been described, wherein the CO2 gas reacts directly with calcium (with a small amount of magnesium), being heated in a stainless steel vessel. This technique of conversion of CO2 to C2H2 is as convenient as Barker's (2). In general its recovery is about 90%.A special electronic circuit was used to discriminate the "cross-talk" between the two photomultipliers, thus reducing the background of the scintillation counter to 5.6 ?0.1 cpm, while the net counting rate of the modern standard is 58 cpm.
